"Kay and Her Grandson" Photo by Chris Hancock — A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother stand both tired and proud with her grand baby in arms and her chickens at her feet. She makes it a point to tell me that each chicken has a name, her "other children" as she refers to them and that she "could never bear the thought of slaughtering these chickens for food. They are part of our family and they are good to us each day by providing us with plenty of eggs." As I left that evening Kay made it a point to send me home with a jar of homemade preservative and a basket of eggs.
