"Thaddeus and the Sea" Photo by Chris Tyree — Thaddeus Mason, 16, returning from his job pulling up crab pots, watches the shoreline as he heads back into the harbor. His is one of the few boats to still work on the James after Hurricane Isabel. Thaddeus, who dropped out of school to work full-time, is the youngest of the fishermen there and the last of a long line of black fishermen who historically put out of this beach. With regulations on the rise, most of the boats still lying in pieces on the damaged docks, and the smaller seafood hauls out of the river; he understands his future is bleak. Yet, he works hard in a job that pays little for the passion of being on the water.
