Updating Your Credit Report After a Name Change
Published

It’s important to notify the credit bureau after a name change. Having a complete and correct credit report is important when applying for a loan, credit card, apartment, or employment.
The credit bureaus often automatically update a consumer’s file after a last name change due to marriage or divorce. Unfortunately, they don’t do the same for first and middle name changes. Follow the instructions below to notify the credit bureaus of your name change.
Experian
Experian asks that consumers contact them and request a legal name change; do not dispute the dead name. You can write something like: “My legal name is now ___________. Please see the attached documents.” If all necessary documents are attached, your file should be updated within 10 business days.
This can be done through their online portal at experian.com. You will need your Social Security number, all addresses over the past two years, birth date, and court order.
Equifax
Equifax recommends setting up a “myEquifax account under your dead name. Then, go to the dispute center and dispute the name. You will then need to upload documents to verify the name change (Social Security number, address, birth date, and court order). Visit myequifax.com to get started.
TransUnion
Consumers need to write a letter requesting an update to their file. Include your address, birth date, Social Security number, and a copy of the court order in your letter. State the reason for the name change and TransUnion will suppress the dead name.
