Employer Match

Many employers offer matching gift programs that may double or even triple an employee’s donation to organizations such as VPLC. This option may even be available if you have retired or your spouse makes the contribution. Ask your employer’s human resources department whether a matching gift program is available and how to utilize it.

If you arrange a matched gift with your employer, please notify Toni Maxey, Director of Development, at 804-658-9969 or givingforjustice@vplc.org to ensure you receive proper credit.

Jill A. Hanken Scholarship Fund

For over 40 years, Jill Hanken worked at VPLC and paved the way for better healthcare in the Commonwealth. A relentless advocate for low-income Virginians, she successfully fought for advances that have given hundreds of thousands access to healthcare. The Jill A. Hanken Scholarship Program honors Jill’s accomplishments and builds upon her legacy by training health law advocates in Virginia’s legal aid community.

Legacy Giving

You can support VPLC in various ways, including through your estate. Legacy giving, also called planned giving, funds the future of justice! Your attorney can advise you on the options available and make arrangements for future support to meet your personal needs best.

Legacy giving, also called planned giving, is a fundraising method where a significant charitable gift is made during a donor’s life or at death that is part of the donor’s financial situation or estate. By giving a legacy gift to VPLC, you ensure that VPLC can continue to make progress toward our mission. You have the ability to support VPLC to make lasting changes in the lives of countless Virginians.

One of the easiest ways to make a legacy gift is through a bequest in your will. You can also name VPLC as a beneficiary to your IRA, Keoghs, or 401(k) plans as a way to leave some or all of your assets to the organization.

When you leave a legacy gift, you make a lasting impact on the future of justice and ensure VPLC has the resources to continue advocating, educating, and litigating till the systemic barriers that keep lower-income Virginians in poverty are dismantled.

Whether your legacy, in any amount, to VPLC is through your will, retirement assets, donor-advised funds or charitable trusts, or insurance programs, please let us know. We’d love to include you in VPLC’s Legacy Society membership.

VPLC’s Legacy Society honors our most committed partners in the fight to break down the systemic barriers that keep people in poverty. These barriers have been in place for generations. Legacy Society members understand it will take another generation (or more) to break them down completely. When you pledge future support, you provide financial support for the continued fight for justice and the future of justice.

IRA Charitable Rollover

Make a tax-free gift with your IRA.*
Typically, funds distributed from a Traditional IRA are included in your taxable income, which will likely increase your overall tax burden. This additional income may sometimes move you into a higher tax bracket.

However, the IRA Charitable Rollover sometimes called qualified charity distribution, or QCD for short, is an exception to this rule. Funds go directly from your IRA to your chosen charitable organization, like VPLC, without going to you first, thereby lowering your adjusted gross income and effectively reducing your income taxes.

Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) are amounts you must withdraw annually from your Traditional IRA once you’re eligible (as of 1/1/2023, the age to start taking RMDs increased from age 72 to age 73, except for donors who turned 72 before January 1, 2023).

If you do not withdraw your required minimum distribution, you will face a penalty tax of 25% of the required withdrawal amount. You can avoid this penalty by gifting your required minimum distribution to VPLC. Your IRA Charitable Rollover donation also maximizes your impact since, in most cases, the organization receives the total amount of the transfer tax-free. It’s a win-win situation that supports both you and VPLC.

Information you may need when requesting VPLC as a recipient of your RMD.
Legal Name: Virginia Poverty Law Center
VPLC’s EIN: 54-1093402
Mailing Address: 919 East Main Street, Suite 610 | Richmond, VA 23219

Include details if you’d like your donation designated for General Operating Support or restricted to a particular program. Be sure to provide the specific amount of your gift as well.

Please consult your financial or tax advisor for more information if you are considering this support. Contact Toni Maxey, Director of Development, at 804-658-9969 or givingforjustice@vplc.org, if any assistance is needed.

*The above information is believed to be accurate as of January 2023. However, please consult your financial or tax advisor for accuracy and more information on making a gift with your required minimum distribution.
