VPLC works to strengthen systems so they are accessible, affordable, and designed to meet the needs of all Virginians, especially those too often overlooked. We advocate for equitable funding, better provider networks, and accountability from public and private health systems. By addressing systemic gaps, we help ensure that care is available when and where people need it most, regardless of income, language, age, or ZIP code.
Our work in this area includes:
Safeguarding Access Under the ACA
We defend and strengthen the Affordable Care Act to ensure that everyone—especially low-income Virginians—can access comprehensive, affordable, and convenient health care.
We will continue to:
- Advocate for full Medicaid expansion and robust enrollment efforts
- Monitor federal and state proposals that could reduce access to ACA benefits
- Educate communities about their rights and coverage options under the ACA
Supporting Virginia’s Health Safety Net
We work to strengthen the systems that provide care for Virginians who are uninsured or underinsured. This includes:
- Supporting funding and policy improvements for community clinics and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs).
- Advocating for stronger oversight and enforcement of hospital charity care obligations.
- Promoting investment in public health programs that address local and regional disparities.
Making Managed Care Work for Patients
We push to make Virginia’s Medicaid Managed Care program more transparent, accountable, and responsive to patient needs. We regularly:
- Advocate for fair appeals and grievance processes for enrollees.
- Monitor managed care organizations to ensure timely and appropriate care.
- Work with partners to reduce administrative burdens that hinder patient access.
