Promoting a Fair and Transparent Marketplace

A fair economy starts with fair rules. We’re fighting to make Virginia’s financial systems transparent, accountable, and just for all people, not just powerful interests.

Unfair practices such as payday loans, hidden fees, and wage garnishments trap families in the cycle of poverty. VPLC is working to reform the laws that govern these systems and ensure every Virginian gets a fair deal. We expose predatory lenders, challenge deceptive sales tactics, and advocate for consumer protections that promote financial stability. Our goal is a marketplace built on transparency, accountability, and dignity.

Our work in this area includes:

Stopping Consumer Fraud and False Advertising

Deceptive business practices harm the people least able to absorb financial loss. We work to expose scams, hold companies accountable, and strengthen protections for Virginia consumers. Our efforts include:

  • Challenging fraudulent practices that target low-income and vulnerable communities.
  • Advocating for stronger enforcement and penalties against false advertising and deceptive sales.
  • Supporting legislation that closes loopholes and expands consumer protections.
  • Empower consumers with information to recognize and report scams.

Curbing Abusive Loan and Credit Practices

Predatory lenders use high-interest loans and hidden fees to trap people in cycles of debt. We fight to regulate these practices and ensure access to fair, transparent credit. We work to:

  • Regulate payday, auto title, and high-cost installment loans.
  • Push for interest rate caps and clear, accessible disclosures.
  • Monitor emerging fintech products for predatory features.
  • Support reforms that reduce disparities in credit access.

Protecting Wages from Unfair Collection

Wage garnishment and aggressive debt collection strip essential income from working families. We advocate for stronger protections to ensure people can meet basic needs while resolving debt. Our advocacy includes:

  • Raising the amount of wages and assets shielded from garnishment.
  • Challenging abusive or unlawful debt collection practices.
  • Supporting reforms to reduce the burden of medical debt.
  • Promoting transparency and fairness in debt-related court proceedings.
