Refusing Expansion Would be a Costly Mistake for Virginia

The Virginia Poverty Law Center has joined with other advocacy groups to support the Medicaid expansion that is part of the Affordable Care Act. “The Medicaid expansion could provide coverage to about 425,000 very low-income Virginians — nearly half of the one million uninsured in this state,” said VPLC health law attorney Jill Hanken.  “We need to convince the Governor and the General Assembly that the state’s outlay of funds would be well worth the return – tens of billions in federal funding to support jobs, boost Virginia’s economy and provide medical care for people who cannot afford insurance in the current market.” A new report by The Commonwealth Institute describes what’s at stake.
