Protecting Consumer Rights and Economic Fairness

Every Virginian deserves a fair shot at financial stability. VPLC is working to hold corporations and government institutions accountable so that the systems designed to support people don’t end up trapping them in a cycle of poverty.

Rising utility bills and aggressive debt collection are just two examples of how low-income Virginians face an economy and policy decisions that are rooted in racial inequality and systemic discrimination. At VPLC, we’re using policy advocacy, litigation, and community education to challenge unfair financial practices and strengthen economic protections.

Whether we’re fighting for fair unemployment insurance, challenging predatory lenders, or pushing for affordable energy access, our goal is the same: a system where all consumers are treated with dignity and respect. We also advocate for clear, enforceable rules that level the playing field and promote economic justice. When financial systems are fair and transparent, people can build real security.

How We Advance Economic Fairness

Ensuring Access to Affordable Utilities and Energy

Utilities are essential, and no one should have their power or water turned off because they’re facing financial hardships. We hold monopoly companies accountable to make sure low-income Virginians aren’t left in the dark.

Fighting Predatory Lending and Abusive Debt Collection

We’re fighting back against high-interest loans, abusive collection practices, and policies that keep families stuck in debt.

Promoting a Fair and Transparent Marketplace

A fair economy starts with fair rules. We’re fighting to make Virginia’s financial systems transparent, accountable, and just for all people, not just powerful interests.

Strengthening Unemployment Insurance Protections

Unemployment benefits are a lifeline for many people. We’re working to improve the current unemployment system, making it fair, functional, and accessible for all of Virginia’s workers.
